My name is Brett miller and I am currently recovering from injuries received while in Iraq. I finished my last surgery over a month ago and have been going through physical therapy for some time now. before I was deployed to Iraq I was a national guard soldier with a life and loved to ride everywhere I could and I have been thinking about nothing but since the day I got hit. While I have been here at the hospital in fort Lewis I have been asking around for some time about trails in area, or places I can go to ride, but most folks here on post don’t know anything. So after emailing the BBTC group bob sent me to you. I was evacuated out of Iraq in aug. of 2005 with some pretty gnarly head injuries and other misc. perforations from my 9th bomb blast. This particular one occurred six feet off my door in a gun truck going about 65 mph. I have been in landstuhl Germany, Walter reed and countless other military hospitals before eventually getting here to fort Lewis. Once I was able to walk I bought a vehicle and put a bike on layaway in December. I am now a couple hundred away from getting the bike and needed some direction. After looking over your site for some time I am very intrigued by the lessons you guys provide and the knowledge you guys have of the rides and trails of the area. And since I am in a unique situation I feel you would know best for my training scenario to start. Before Iraq I had a specialized FSR and a big hit. Unfortunately I never got to ride the big hit since my ex left with some dude and sold the bike before I could come home to ride it. I have always tried to take on the big trails and downhill runs on the FSR but it was just too light and the suspension was lacking and my technique was something to laugh at, to say the least. Since I put my giant “faith” on layaway I have been looking for a group of folks to be able to give me advice and point me in the right direction. Most of the shops around here are very cross country oriented or strictly road riders and don’t have a lot of insight on my path. Thus has leaded me to you folks. Considering my situation and condition do you think you could help me in a training regiment and some places to ride and a pace to start with? I feel it would be a great benefit for the both of us to see where I stand in the grand scheme of two wheeled tyranny. Looking to get into some off road stuff. I used to ride(motorized)dirt bike in my earlier years, so I have some off road experience. Looking to meet new friends, get some exercise at the same time. I'm not sure I could keep up with the more experienced riders, so I'm a little nervous about meeting up with a group, I wouldn't want to hold everyone up. Besides for a competitive aspect cyclocross and road racing are a much more pure venue for racing. Currently I would classify myself as a roadie. I have spent the last two years racing on the road, but still enjoying coming back and mountain biking as recreational aspect of biking. Living across the street from St. Edwards park I enjoy spinning around those trails after work, and also consider Tolt-McDonald in Carnation to be one of the best close by mountain biking destinations. I do run a small club (The INOLC "In Need Of Local Citizens"), but I'm looking at having all of our members moving into the Single Track ranks (don't get excited, we're only 8 strong). We go to a different trail every weekend, this past weekend, we were at Tiger. Banner is my home trail though. What you guys do is great. The main reason that we're looking at joining is the advocacy. Trails can be much better maintained if people work as a team, instead of our usual 20 minutes worth of work for everyone who goes. We're all new to the region, but I think we can contribute.
